How to choose a stool: what to consider
A stool does many jobs, so first decide which one it is for. These are the things worth settling before you choose one. The numbers are common rules of thumb, not fixed rules.
Height
- A stool at a dining table is commonly about 45 cm to the seat. At a kitchen counter, around 60-65 cm; at a taller bar, around 70-75 cm. Leave about 25-30 cm between the seat and the underside of the surface.
- A low stool, around 30-40 cm, works as a perch, a footrest or a side table.
Seat
- With no back, the seat does all the work: a shaped or slightly dished seat is more comfortable for longer than a flat one.
- A seat around 30-35 cm across suits short sittings; a wider one suits longer.
- A padded seat is softer; check whether the cover can be replaced.
Stability
- Three legs sit steadily on an uneven floor, while four need a level one. Legs that splay outward are harder to tip.
- A footrest ring helps at counter height, and also braces the legs.
- Check the weight rating if more than one person will use it, or if it will be used as a step.
Materials and care
- Solid wood can be refinished. Metal can scratch or dent; powder-coated finishes can chip. Stone, ceramic and concrete are heavy and can chip at the edges.
- Leather and fabric padding age differently; ask whether the cover can be replaced.
- Check the feet. Glides or felt pads protect floors; rubber feet may mark some floors.
Stacking and storing
- Stacking stools save space but add wear where they touch. Check how many can be stacked and whether they mark each other.
Questions worth asking the maker
- What is the exact seat height and width? What is the weight rating? Are the feet replaceable? Can the seat cover be replaced? What are the delivery and return terms?
