How to choose a bar stool: what to consider
A bar stool is chosen from a measurement: the height of the surface it sits at. These are the things worth settling before you choose one. The numbers are common rules of thumb, not fixed rules.
Seat height
- Measure from the floor to the underside of the counter or bar. Leave about 25-30 cm between the seat and that surface.
- Counter height is commonly 85-95 cm, which suits a seat of about 60-65 cm. Bar height is commonly 105-115 cm, which suits about 70-80 cm.
- An adjustable-height stool covers different surfaces, but check how the mechanism wears and whether it can be replaced.
Back, arms and swivel
- A backless stool tucks fully under the counter and suits short stays. A back supports longer sitting; a low back is a compromise.
- A swivel makes getting in and out easy and suits tight spaces; a fixed stool is steadier. Look for a swivel that stops or returns.
- Check the width of the seat and the space between stools; allow around 60-65 cm each along the counter.
Footrest and stability
- A footrest matters at this height: with none, feet dangle. A ring or a rail also braces the legs.
- Check the base. A wide base resists tipping; a narrow base needs more care. Check the weight rating.
Floors and noise
- Fit glides or felt pads that suit the floor. Some feet mark vinyl or lacquered floors, and some stools scrape when pulled out.
Materials and care
- Solid wood can be refinished. Metal frames can scratch; powder-coated finishes can chip. Upholstery and leather age differently, and a wipeable seat suits a kitchen.
Questions worth asking the maker
- What is the exact seat height, and is it adjustable? What is the weight rating? Which feet are fitted, and can they be replaced? Can the seat cover be replaced? What are the delivery and return terms?
